Up, Up & Away: Creating Opportunities As One Grows Up

Up, Up & Away: Creating Opportunities As One Grows Up

April is World Autism Awareness Month

Did you know that 1 in 59 children is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder? In our community alone, there are an estimated 10,000 individuals living with autism and in need of custom programs and support services like those offered by AutismUp. Join us in showing your support, getting involved, and lifting families living with autism up! Here’s how:

7 Ways to Be an Ally for Autism

There are simple steps you can take to spread the word about autism inclusion. Share your pledge to make our community a friendlier, more welcoming place with your social media followers. Wear blue and green, then snap a selfie and tag #AutismUp. Or even light up your house or storefront in blue or green for the month.

We’re offering free lawn signs* for you to display at your home or business. We ask that you please consider a donation to AutismUp to help support our weekly classes and activities, educational workshops, community events, and scholarship program. Share your interest in a lawn sign, and we’ll notify you via email when they’re ready for pick-up here at AutismUp.

*Limited number of lawn signs available! First come, first served — please denote your interest and we will consider additional print runs in the future.

Wear your pride! Visit our online store to buy Autism Awareness T-shirts and other AutismUp gear. All proceeds benefit AU programs and services offered at no cost to member families.

Follow AutismUp on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. We’re using the hashtags #UpUpandAway, #CreatingOpportunities and #AutismUp for our Autism Awareness Month posts. These hashtags reflect our mission to be there for the entire journey that families with autism face, and to improve quality of life for individuals with support services at every stage. To stay up to date on all AutismUp news, events, and ways to get involved in April and beyond, sign up for our eNewsletter.

Our 13th annual gala is taking place on Saturday, April 27 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. This vintage travel-themed event — Up, Up & Away — is our largest fundraising event to support the continued expansion and enhancement of AutismUp support services, so we can help families with autism take flight! Grab your tickets, and see you there!

Schools and educational campuses can spread autism awareness to students and the community through engaging social media and group activities. Get in touch about our Up, Up & Away scavenger hunt, taking place on local campuses during the month of April. We provide all the pieces and instructions for a successful day of fun for a great cause — and you help families with autism take flight!

Local Businesses — 2 More Ways to Show Your Support:

AutismUp’s LinkUp Program offers supported volunteering opportunities to participants 18+ at local businesses. We’re grateful for our current partnerships with Vision Buick GMC (photos below) and YMCA Bay View, and we’re always looking for other businesses to open their doors as new LinkUp partners, so more young adults with autism can develop on-the-job skills and build self-confidence. Learn more about LinkUp or contact Program Director, Phil Mesiti, at pmesiti@autismup.org or contact@autismup.org to get involved.

Share your commitment to creating an inclusive, autism-friendly community by displaying an AutismUp kite installation at your business throughout April. AutismUp has a number of wooden kites that can be easily installed. Contact us today if you’re interested!

Together, we can provide help for today and hope for tomorrow, for all families living with autism.
